Why Honeywell’s Health and Usage Monitoring System?

Honeywell’s Health and Usage Monitoring System (HUMS) is equivalent to having a Doctor on board for your helicopter. Recently we launched a new video in partnership with Abu Dhabi Aviation (ADA) that highlights the value they have seen from installing our HUMS system on-board.

ADA began in 1976 with just two helicopters, by 1983 the fleet size had increased to a total of 34 aircraft, flying over 38,800 hours annually, an average of over 100 hours per day. Today it’s the largest commercial helicopter operator in the Middle East, operating 61 helicopters and 3 fixed-wing aircraft. Since its inception, ADA is now approaching the 1,000,000 flight hour’s mark in helicopters.

The high intensity of offshore oil support work has required an annual average of approximately 200,000 landings and take-offs. In an average month, 15,000 passengers and 162,000kgs of freight are transferred to and from offshore areas. In addition, over 11,000 passengers are moved between various offshore locations. To ensure this high level of customer service and to remain competitive, ADA puts great emphasis on the reliability of its maintenance services.

Using Honeywell’s VXP Onboard Health and Usage Monitoring system (HUMS) is equivalent to having a doctor on board, the system monitors critical vibration analysis and reports any issues. This rigorous testing increases flight safety and saves money by prolonging the life of engine and drive components.

Engineering Director Richard Lalor says that the Honeywell “HUMS system is an extremely important system that we use on a regular basis. It’s also becoming mandated with offshore contracts, the regulators are also imposing we have HUMS system fitted to our aircraft”
