Honeywell has designed the Rotational Hand Controllers (RHCs) for the Apollo and Shuttle programs and is currently providing the RHC for the Orion Space Capsule. Hand controllers are used to manipulate the attitude of the spacecraft. Mechanical inputs from the crew are converted to electrical position and switch function commands. Each RHC is a 3-axes flight control stick that provides an interface between the crew and the Guidance, Navigation and Control (GNC) subsystem to provide rotation about the pitch, yaw and roll axes of the vehicle. The signals are transmitted by a RS422 interface to the GNC computers.
